About

I spent six years at Uber, have led product and operations, and have been COO and CEO of a startup. I have helped build early-stage AI companies. I now coach leaders dealing with fast growth, regulators, boards and investors.

Uber

I joined Uber in 2015 and spent six years there. I launched Uber in Merseyside, ran the UK marketplace team and managed Uber’s operational response to the terrorist attacks of 2017.

After TfL refused to renew Uber’s London licence, I built the company’s first UK safety team. I reported to the UK board and rebuilt relationships with TfL and the Metropolitan Police.

From 2019 to 2021, through the pandemic, I led Uber’s new rider team for the UK and Ireland: eight senior managers and a $500m P&L. We wrote Uber’s first UK rider product strategy, based on research into what customers needed and weren’t receiving through the app. Then we launched new products. They included Comfort, a premium economy option; Green, an electric-car option, which reached an annual run rate of $55m within four weeks; and experiments such as Uber Health and Rentals. With Thames Clippers, we launched Uber Boat. It was the first time riders in Europe, the Middle East or Africa could buy transport tickets in the Uber app.

Gyre and early-stage companies

After Uber I was COO and then CEO of Gyre, a company of 18 people. Gyre does team and leadership coaching. We built software to assess how teams work and developed scalable frameworks to help leaders build high-performing teams throughout their organisations.

Since then I have set up and run operations, product and engineering teams at early-stage AI companies in regtech, healthtech and recruitment-tech. One is an FCA-regulated compliance business. I also co-founded an AI-augmented telehealth service in Nigeria, which now serves more than 9,000 people.

I continue this work through Sanara Consulting, my product and operations consultancy.

Before Uber

I began my career in equity sales at Numis Securities. I then spent four years in strategy and M&A at Equinor, the Norwegian energy company.

Outside work

I grew up on the edge of the Cotswolds. I played a lot of sport when I was younger, particularly rugby. I had England rugby trials and played for Bath Rugby’s under-19s and under-21s, then in the National Leagues. I now spend my time hiking and playing tennis and padel.

I live in London with my partner and our dog, Pema.

Meditation and nature

I get out of the city as often as I can. I think most clearly when I’m walking or sitting somewhere quiet outdoors.

I started meditating in 2018. As I became more experienced, I felt I was seeing the world in a way I had never seen it before. I used to walk through a small park on the way to work, and each day I challenged myself to see something beautiful I hadn’t noticed before. In nature, this is an infinite and ever-changing landscape. It might be a flower, the sound of birdsong or the way the light shone through the leaves. It brought presence and grounding to my daily commute, and a passion for mindfulness and meditation.

I have spent a lot of time in nature, on long hikes and on vision quests: four days and four nights alone, with only water, a tarp and a sleeping bag. I have found there is much to gain when the mind is allowed to settle. Nature starts to become a mirror, and people can have deep revelations about themselves and their lives.

I continue to study subjects I find fascinating, such as psychology, alongside my own personal development.
